Hidden Garosugil: 5 Cafes Off The Main Street

Hidden Garosugil: 5 Cafes Off The Main Street

Garosugil is known as Seoul’s “cafe street,” and is appropriately named.  Home to some of the city’s most cutting-edge dessert joints as well as the best brunch offerings, this is one of my favorite places to stroll.

Below are five of my favorite spots that are just off the main street.  Whether it’s brunch, bingsu, or beer you’re looking for, these little gems have it!

1. Maman Gateau (마망갸또)

You’ll want to visit the dentist after heading to this cafe.  Get the mile-high Caramel Bingsu which is shaved ice, condensed milk, caramel sauce, caramel ice cream, an almond caramel cookie, and of course, caramel squares on the side.  Don’t forget the extra sauce they give you in case you weren’t consuming enough sugar already!

The interior is bright with huge windows and comfy chairs.  They have an English menu ;)

2. Fin

My friend and I walked in here one night and thought we finally found out where all the vampires in Seoul gather.  The waiters are long haired men who float around silently taking our order (a honey latte and a Spanish (condensed milk) latte) as we took our seats in the dark and cozy window seats.

The two-story building is low-lit and filled with sofas and huge wooden tables.  They also serve full meals including pizzas and salads.  Not the best place for reading, but a great spot to forget you’re in a bright and bustling city.

3. Pumpkin Terrier

Where are my cake lovers!? Hummingbird, apple cinnamon, cheesecake, and my personal favorite, earl grey. It’s all there ready for you to devour.  It’s right across the street from the famous cake shop Dore Dore but is never as ridiculously crowded and tastes just as delicious! Plus, doesn’t it just have the cutest name?

Added bonus: they bake in-house so the entire cafe smells like fresh baked cake!

4. IKOVOX

Not sure if you need a shot of espresso or a cold pint of beer? Well, Ikovox has got you covered.  Serving fresh roasted coffee as well as beer on tap, Ikovox is the perfect mid-afternoon pick me up.

This tiny cafe is half-underground and if you sit at the outside tables the baristas often just pass you your drink through the windows.  While the outside seating can be crowded with bicyclists after their Saturday morning ride, the indoor seating is always available!

5. Able

If you are serious about your brunch, you need to get to Able - now.  With their brunch menu ranging from pizzas to omlettes, to the most beautiful fruit-covered french toast you’ve ever seen, Able has the brunch game on lock. Plus the cafe also sells home-made jam, candles, and other cute knick-knacks!

Don’t even get me started on the coffee mugs that are as big as your head. You will not leave here hungry, trust me.

Now let’s grab a coffee and head down to the Han!
